USWP · ODP · National Pipeline

USWP Futures.

An international training and competition program for 14U, 16U and 18U athletes identified through USA Water Polo's ODP pipeline.

The Futures program was built in 2016 in cooperation with USA Water Polo's Olympic Development Program. It gives selected 14U, 16U and 18U athletes an international competitive season without stepping outside the national pipeline.

Athletes travel. Coaches travel. USWP national-team staff evaluate them in a live setting against European national teams and top clubs of the highest level. When they come home, they have international tape, new tactical vocabulary, and the confidence that only real competition produces.

This is a program for athletes who are ready for it — identified by their federation, supported by their clubs, and prepared by their coaches. Talent alone is not the bar; the bar is experience and readiness to compete against someone who has been playing the sport since they were five.

Host cities

Four host cities. Athens, Budapest, Belgrade and Koper.

Greece · Olympic Aquatic Centre

Athens

Why we go. Athens brings the 2004 Olympic Aquatic Centre and the strongest clubs in Greek water polo. Athletes train and scrimmage at an Olympic venue before international games.

What travels home. Olympic-venue training, Mediterranean racing culture, and international tape in front of USWP National Team staff.

Hungary · Danube Arena

Budapest

Why we go. Budapest is the spiritual home of water polo. Athletes train and scrimmage with local clubs at the Duna Arena before an international tournament and official games.

What travels home. Days on the Danube, a city built on the sport, and international tape in front of USWP National Team staff.

Serbia · Water polo capital

Belgrade

Why we go. Belgrade is a water polo superpower, with multiple Olympic golds in a generation. Training and scrimmages against intense Serbian clubs test every athlete on the roster.

What travels home. The toughest pool culture in the sport, and a stage to be seen, coached and evaluated by USWP National Team staff.

Slovenia · Adriatic coast

Koper

Why we go. Koper offers a serious 50-metre municipal pool on the Slovenian coast, with Trieste fifteen minutes away. A focused base for training and international games on the northern Adriatic.

What travels home. A calm coastal base, real international competition, and a written evaluation that travels home with every athlete.

Eligibility

Who plays for the Futures.

Identification is run through USA Water Polo staff using the Olympic Development Program. The Futures is not an alternative to the ODP — it is a tool inside it.

18U
Men & Women

Athletes born in the junior age group; training and competing as a final step before senior National Team consideration.

16U
Boys & Girls

Athletes in the selection window for the U18 and U17 national age groups; tournaments scheduled around World Aquatics and PanAm windows.

14U
Boys & Girls

The first international exposure. Heavy on training, light on travel — designed to be a positive first step, not a grinder.

Coaching staff

USWP staff travels with us.

Every trip is staffed by coaches from the USWP coaching pipeline and ODP program. They are the people your athletes are trying to impress back home — now they are on the deck with you, for ten days, watching a European scrimmage.

Global Wave adds a travel lead, a goalkeeping specialist, an athletic therapist and a team manager to every cohort. Parents are briefed before departure. Coaches debrief after every session.
